Electrical Panels and Medium Voltage Switchgear

Selection Guide

Which Product Goes Where?

Power flows from the grid to the loads through medium voltage switchgear, the transformer and then low voltage panels. The table below shows where each Devpan panel and switchgear sits in this chain, with typical rated currents and short-circuit values.
ProductFamily and voltageLocation and role in the installationTypical rated value

Gas-insulated modular switchgear Medium voltage / 12 – 24 kV Ring distribution networks, building and compact substations 630 A ring / 200 A transformer feeder
DevPanelLow voltage / 0.4 kVDownstream of transformers and generators; the facility’s main distribution point1000 – 6300 A / 50 – 100 kA
DevControl Low voltage / 0.4 kV Process and machine rooms; motor and drive control 630 – 4000 A / fixed or withdrawable feeders

DevPower Low voltage / 0.4 kV Lighting and socket circuits; group and scenario control 63 – 400 A

The values in the table are typical application ranges; final values are set after the single-line diagram, protection coordination and short-circuit calculations.

Design Principles

Standards and Design Principles for Electrical Panels

A facility’s electrical infrastructure should be treated as a single chain, from the medium voltage switchgear to the final circuit. Devpan applies the same design discipline from end to end.

Two standards for panels and switchgear

Low voltage panels are designed to IEC 61439-1/-2 and medium voltage switchgear to IEC 62271-200. On both sides, ratings, temperature rise, short-circuit withstand and IP rating are backed by verified designs. IP rating and form of separation are selected for each project.

Short circuit and protection coordination

Network short-circuit power and transformer impedance together determine the breaking capacity on the medium voltage side and the short-circuit withstand on the low voltage side. Current transformer C/k settings and relay grading follow from this calculation.

Busbar systems and current ratings

Busbar cross-sections are selected considering ambient temperature and layout. Copper current-carrying capacities and cable carrying capacities tables are the common reference for both switchgear and panels.

Measuring, monitoring and automation

The analyzer, protection relay and energy monitoring devices send their data to the central system via Modbus RTU/TCP or IEC 61850. Our automation and SCADA team brings medium and low voltage data together on a single screen.
Production Process

Electrical Panels Production Process: From Design to Commissioning

When the medium voltage switchgear and the low voltage panel are handled together in the same project, the interfaces, protection grading and commissioning schedule are managed from a single source. Our project design and project management teams follow the process from start to finish.
  1. Needs analysis and single-line diagramNetwork short-circuit power, transformer ratings, supply scenarios and the load schedule are collected; the medium and low voltage sides are built on a single diagram.
  2. Product and rating selectionThe switchgear type (metal-clad, modular AIS or RMU) and panel type (MDB, MCC, SDB, PFC, LPDB) are defined; rated current, short-circuit withstand, form of separation and IP rating are confirmed.
  3. Detailed design and approvalLayout, busbar routing, cable entries, assembly drawings and bill of materials are prepared; approval drawings are shared with the client and the consultant.
  4. Manufacturing and assemblySheet metal processing, painting, busbar manufacturing, equipment installation and wiring are done in our own facility; each switchgear unit and panel is labeled for traceability.
  5. Routine testing and commissioningInsulation, mechanical and functional tests are performed; site installation, energization, relay settings and operator training are supported.

In short: Devpan electrical panels and medium voltage switchgear

  • Medium voltage (up to 36 kV): Dev24/36 metal-enclosed modular switchgear series and Gas-insulated modular switchgear (RMU).
  • Low voltage (0.4 kV): DevPanel main distribution board, DevControl motor control center, DevBox sub-distribution board, DevComp power factor correction panel and DevPower lighting and power panel.
  • Common approach: the same engineering, manufacturing and routine testing discipline from single-line diagram to commissioning; IEC 61439 and IEC 62271-200 compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which electrical panels and switchgear does Devpan manufacture?

Devpan’s range covers seven products in two families. On the medium voltage side, there is the Dev24/36 metal-enclosed modular switchgear series and the Gas-insulated modular switchgear gas-insulated ring main unit. On the low voltage side, there is the DevPanel main distribution panel, the DevControl motor control center, the DevBox sub-distribution panel, the DevComp compensation panel and the DevPower lighting and power panel.

What is the difference between a medium voltage switchgear and a low voltage switchboard?

Medium voltage switchgear operates above 1 kV, typically at 12–36 kV, taking power from the grid and feeding the power transformer; it is built to IEC 62271-200. The low voltage panel distributes power at 0.4 kV downstream of the transformer and is built to the IEC 61439 series. They are successive links in the same chain: the switchgear handles protection and metering, the panel handles distribution and control.

Which panels work together in a facility?

In a typical industrial facility, the following work together: medium voltage switchgear (Dev24/36 or Gas-insulated modular switchgear) at the utility incoming point, the main distribution board (DevPanel) downstream of the transformer, the motor control center (DevControl) for the motor groups, the power factor correction panel (DevComp) for reactive power, sub-distribution boards (DevBox) for zone distribution and the lighting and power panel (DevPower) for lighting circuits.

What is the advantage of sourcing medium and low voltage equipment from one company?

When switchgear and panels are designed by the same company, protection coordination comes from a single calculation, CT ratios and relay grading are consistent, and busbar and cable interfaces are resolved from the start. With a single commissioning team, split responsibilities and site coordination time are reduced.

According to which standards are electrical panels produced?

Low voltage panels are built to IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2, and medium voltage switchgear to IEC 62271-200. Circuit breakers are selected to IEC 62271-100, disconnectors and earthing switches to IEC 62271-102, and the current and voltage transformers are selected according to IEC 61869 series.
