About the Project
In an airport terminal, a single power failure can halt check-in, baggage handling, security screening and flight information systems at once. The distribution system therefore has to keep faults local, without disturbing passenger flow, and transfer critical loads to a backup source within seconds. Turkistan’s hot, dry summers raise the air-conditioning demand of large glazed terminal volumes, while dust increases the protection needed for baggage conveyors and mechanical plant motors.
At this scale a typical arrangement uses approximately 4 × 1,600 kVA transformers fed from the 10 kV network, forming two independent main distribution paths. DevPanel boards with a 2 × 3,200 A main busbar and Form 4a-4b segregation use a bus coupler to transfer load if one transformer is lost. DevControl MCCs drive baggage handling and HVAC motors, while DevBox and DevPower boards feed terminal zones and landside lighting. Generators of around 2 × 1,250 kVA, together with UPS systems, support safety and operational loads.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
Devpan’s scope runs from the terminal’s low-voltage main distribution to the baggage system and zone boards.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 3,200 A main busbar, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4a-4b, bus coupler and generator changeover.
- Motor control centres (DevControl): drive-fed circuits for baggage conveyors, air handling units and pump sets.
- Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): zone boards for check-in, departure lounges, retail areas and technical rooms.
- Lighting and power panels (DevPower): terminal interior lighting, car park and access road lighting.
- Power factor correction (DevComp): harmonic-filtered compensation for drive and air-conditioning loads.

Devpan Products Used in This Project
Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Passenger operations continuity
Check-in, security screening and flight information systems are grouped as priority loads and fed from generator- and UPS-backed circuits.
Baggage handling system
The many conveyor motors are grouped under zonal MCCs so a fault on one line does not stop the whole system.
Selectivity and fault isolation
Protective devices are coordinated for selectivity, so a fault is cleared by the nearest breaker and the rest of the terminal keeps running.
Expansion capacity
Spare outgoing ways are left in the main boards so new gates and apron areas can be connected as passenger capacity grows.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the installed power of a terminal on the scale of Turkistan International Airport?
For an airport terminal of this scale the installed power is approximately 6,400 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is typically rated 2 × 3,200 A with a withstand of 65 kA / 1 s, and the medium-voltage level is 10 kV.
How is a grid outage handled at the airport?
Critical systems are fed without interruption by UPS, and generators of typically around 2 × 1,250 kVA start and take over the priority loads through automatic changeover.
Why use dedicated MCCs for the baggage system?
Dedicated MCCs group conveyor motors by zone, so maintenance or a fault only takes the relevant line out of service, and they keep drive harmonics away from the main distribution.
