98 Schools Project — School Building Switchboard Project

The 98 Schools Project is a school construction programme in Turkmenistan covering a large number of educational buildings. Devpan supplied standardised main distribution, sub-distribution and lighting boards for the project.

About the Project

About the Project

When many schools are built under a single programme, the key requirement for power distribution is repeatability: the same board types, the same protection logic and the same spare parts simplify both installation and the years of maintenance that follow. In schools, pupil safety comes first, so residual current protection, emergency lighting and fire detection supplies must be engineered with care. Turkmenistan’s hot summers and cold winters also cause cooling and heating loads to vary markedly with the seasons.

For a school complex at this scale, approximately 2 × 800 kVA transformers are typically fed from the 10 kV network. DevPanel boards with a 2 × 1,250 A main busbar and Form 3b segregation run in two sections with a bus coupler. DevBox floor boards provide separate circuits for classrooms, laboratories, the sports hall and the canteen, while DevPower panels manage indoor and outdoor lighting on time schedules. DevComp panels correct the power factor, and a generator of around 630 kVA supports emergency lighting, fire systems and essential services.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope is a standard set of boards for each school, from low-voltage main distribution to classroom and lighting boards.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 1,250 A main busbar, 50 kA / 1 s, Form 3b, bus coupler and generator changeover.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): floor boards for classrooms, laboratories, sports hall, canteen and administration, IP31-IP41.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): time-scheduled and photocell control for corridor, classroom and grounds lighting.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): automatic stepped compensation for air-conditioning and lighting loads.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Standardisation

Using the same board types and circuit layout in every school simplifies manufacturing, installation, testing and spare-parts management.

Pupil safety

Classroom and laboratory sockets are fed from 30 mA RCD-protected circuits, and boards are lockable against unauthorised access.

Emergency supplies

Emergency lighting, fire detection and public address systems are fed from a separate, generator-backed busbar.

Timetable-driven load profile

Because demand changes sharply through the school day, lighting and air conditioning are managed by time schedules.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power of a school within the 98 Schools Project?

For a school complex of this scale the installed power is approximately 1,600 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 800 kVA. The main busbar is typically rated 2 × 1,250 A with a withstand of 50 kA / 1 s, and the medium-voltage level is 10 kV.

What is the benefit of standard boards across many schools?

A standard design shortens manufacturing and delivery times, lets operating staff work with identical boards in every school and allows a common spare-parts stock.

Which loads are supplied during a grid outage?

Typically a generator of around 630 kVA takes over emergency lighting, fire detection and public address, heating pumps and essential service loads.
