About the Project

About the Project

In an energy facility, auxiliary systems are as critical as the main generating equipment: if cooling water pumps, fans, lubrication units or control systems stop, the plant stops with them. Turkmenistan’s summer temperatures approaching 45 °C and fine wind-blown desert dust have a direct impact on enclosures, cooling and busbar sizing. Frequent starting and stopping of auxiliary motors also makes voltage quality and protection coordination important.

At this scale a typical configuration uses 10 kV Dev24/36 modular switchgear to feed approximately 2 × 1,250 kVA station service transformers. On the low-voltage side, DevPanel boards with a 2 × 1,600 A main busbar and Form 3b segregation run as two half-busbars with a bus coupler, so auxiliaries are fed from the other half if a transformer is lost. DevControl MCCs control pump, fan and lubrication motors, and DevComp panels balance reactive power. A generator of around 800 kVA carries the loads needed for safe shutdown and restart.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope runs from the medium-voltage switchgear to the facility’s auxiliary and service distribution.

  • MV switchgear (Dev24/36): 10 kV incomer, metering and station service transformer protection panels; modular design with 24 kV rated insulation.
  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 1,600 A main busbar, 50 kA / 1 s, Form 3b, bus coupler and generator changeover.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): VSD and direct-on-line feeders for cooling water pumps, fans and lubrication units, IP54-IP55.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): detuned compensation for motor-dominated auxiliary loads.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): control room, workshop, lighting and administration building supplies.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Auxiliary system reliability

Loads essential to plant continuity, such as cooling and lubrication, are split across two half-busbars to reduce single-point-of-failure risk.

High ambient temperature

Derating factors for ambient temperatures approaching 45 °C are applied to busbars and devices, and switchrooms are air-conditioned.

Dust protection

IP54-IP55 enclosures and filtered ventilation keep fine desert dust away from contacts and drives.

Safe shutdown and restart

On loss of grid, the generator supplies the loads needed to shut the plant down safely and bring it back into service.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the auxiliary power of an energy facility on the scale of Ajayip Bina ES?

For an energy facility of this scale the installed distribution and auxiliary power is approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,250 kVA. The main busbar is typically rated 2 × 1,600 A with a withstand of 50 kA / 1 s, and the medium-voltage level is 10 kV.

How are switchboards protected in a desert climate?

IP54-IP55 enclosures, filtered ventilation or air-conditioned switchrooms, and busbar and device ratings derated for high temperature are applied together.

Why use drives on auxiliary motors?

Variable speed drives match pump and fan flow to demand, saving energy, and limit starting currents to reduce voltage dips on the network.
