About the Project
In a poultry facility, a power failure has harsher consequences than in most industrial plants: if house ventilation stops for just a few minutes, temperature and ammonia levels rise rapidly and bird losses can begin. Fans, heaters, feed and water lines and lighting run around the clock. The dusty, humid atmosphere of poultry houses, long cable runs across a spread-out site and voltage drops on rural networks all shape the distribution design directly.
For a facility of this scale, the typical arrangement is an MV supply between 10 and 34.5 kV depending on the local network, approximately 2 × 800 kVA transformers and a two-section 2 × 1,250 A main distribution. Poultry houses are split between the two busbar sections so that a single fault never affects the whole production. A generator of around 630 kVA supplies ventilation and water lines first through automatic transfer, while motor control panels bring fan groups online in controlled steps.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
Devpan’s scope runs from the main low-voltage distribution to the control of ventilation and feeding equipment inside the houses.
- Motor control panels (DevControl): staged control of ventilation fans, cooling pad pumps, feed augers and water lines.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): typically 2 × 1,250 A, 50 kA / 1 s, Form 3b, with bus coupler and generator transfer.
- Power factor correction (DevComp): automatic stepped compensation for the large fan and pump load.
- Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): poultry house, feed store, office and staff building boards rated IP31 – IP41.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Ventilation continuity
Fan groups are spread over different outgoing circuits and busbar sections, so one tripped device never leaves a whole house without airflow.
Generator load priority
During an outage, ventilation and water lines are transferred to the generator first, followed by feeding and lighting loads in steps.
Long cable runs
On a spread-out site, voltage drop and fault current are calculated together, and sub-distribution boards are placed close to load centres where needed.
Dusty and humid environment
Boards inside houses use suitable IP ratings, gaskets and cable entries to withstand dust and wash-down water.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the installed power for a facility of the scale of Etihad Poultry Project?
For a poultry facility of this scale the installed power is approximately 1,600 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 800 kVA. The main busbar is typically 2 × 1,250 A rated 50 kA / 1 s; the MV supply ranges from 10 to 34.5 kV depending on the network, with a generator of around 630 kVA for backup.
Why is a power cut so critical in poultry houses?
When ventilation stops, temperature and ammonia can reach dangerous levels within minutes. Automatic transfer and alarm systems are therefore a core part of the distribution design.
How are fan motors usually controlled?
Fans are switched in stages according to house temperature; for some groups, variable-speed drives provide both energy savings and a more stable indoor climate.
