İSKİ Terkos Treatment Plant — Pump and MCC Switchboard Project

The İSKİ Terkos Treatment Plant forms part of Istanbul’s drinking water infrastructure, where process continuity is a public service obligation. Devpan supplied the MCC panels for pump and process motors, the main distribution boards, and a measurement infrastructure ready for SCADA integration.

About the Project

About the Project

In water treatment plants the electrical installation is part of a process. Raw water pumps, booster pumps, mixers, blowers, dosing units and filter backwash systems operate in an interdependent sequence. When one stage stops, the entire chain is affected, so motor outgoing ways must be both protected and remotely monitored.

Ambient conditions are the second determining factor. Humidity, chlorine and chemical dosing vapour create a corrosion risk, and electrical rooms are often close to process areas. Enclosure surface treatment, degree of protection and ventilation arrangements are therefore handled differently from standard building switchboards. Driving the pumps with variable speed drives adds a further design input in terms of harmonic management and cable selection.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from plant main distribution to the process motor control centres. Remote monitoring and fault diagnosis are an integral part of the design.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 3,200 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Process motor control centres (DevControl): Variable speed drive and soft starter outgoing ways for pumps, blowers and mixers, in IP54 to IP55 enclosures.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned compensation matched to the drive density.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): Dosing building, filter gallery and administration building panels.
  • Automation and monitoring: Field bus, power analysers and the communication infrastructure that feeds data to the SCADA system.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Selecting the pump starting method

The choice between direct-on-line starting, soft starter and variable speed drive follows not only motor rating but also the risk of pressure surge (water hammer) in the pipework. Controlled acceleration prevents mechanical damage.

Corrosion and humidity protection

In a chlorine and chemical vapour environment, enclosure surface treatment, gasket selection and cable entry sealing are specified to a higher standard than usual, with anti-condensation heaters added where required.

SCADA integration and fault diagnosis

The status, current and fault information of every motor outgoing way is transferred to the central monitoring system over the communication bus, so the nature of a fault can be identified before a site visit.

Process continuity and duty/standby management

Pump sets are configured so that the standby unit starts automatically. Running hours are balanced, which extends equipment life and makes planned maintenance predictable.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which degree of protection is used in treatment plant switchboards?

IP54 is typically used in electrical rooms close to process areas and IP55 in wet or wash-down areas. Beyond the degree of protection, enclosure surface treatment is equally decisive: a paint system with high corrosion resistance is selected for chlorine and chemical vapour environments.

Why are pump motors driven by variable speed drives?

For three reasons: energy saving, pressure control and mechanical protection. Under variable flow the drive runs the pump only as fast as required, lowering energy consumption, while controlled acceleration and deceleration prevent pressure surge in the pipework and avoid damage to valves and pipes.

What are the installed power and main busbar rating?

For a treatment plant of the Terkos scale the installed power is approximately 4,000 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 2,000 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 3,200 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.
