Mauritania Data Center — Tier III Switchboard Project

Mauritania Data Center is built to a Tier III continuity target, allowing concurrent maintainability. Devpan manufactured the main distribution boards suited to a 2N topology, the UPS output and PDU supply panels, and the motor control centres for the cooling plant.

About the Project

About the Project

In data centres the measure of the electrical design is not installed power but continuity class. Tier III requires that any component can be taken out of service for maintenance while the IT load continues to operate without interruption, which means every critical load must be fed from two independent distribution paths.

Site conditions in Mauritania add a second constraint: high ambient temperature and dust. Because temperature rise inside the enclosure directly affects equipment life and current-carrying capacity, busbar and cable cross-sections are increased through a derating calculation. The degree of protection is raised to limit dust ingress, and to keep thermal design workable the filtered ventilation scheme and the internal layout are reconsidered accordingly.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope covers two independent distribution paths, from main distribution through to PDU supplies in the white space. Path A and path B are built in physically separate boards.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 3,200 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, in two independent boards designated A and B.
  • UPS output and PDU supply panels (DevBox): Distribution stage feeding the IT load, with branch circuit measurement infrastructure.
  • Cooling motor control centre (DevControl): Variable speed drive motor outgoing ways for chillers, CRAC/CRAH units and pump sets.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned compensation matched to the harmonic profile on the UPS input side.
  • Energy monitoring: Analyser infrastructure providing branch-level measurement as an input to PUE calculation.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

2N topology and concurrent maintainability

Distribution paths A and B share no common component at any point. When one path is taken out for maintenance, the other is sized to carry the entire IT load on its own.

High ambient temperature and derating

Where ambient temperature exceeds 40 °C, the current-carrying capacity of busbars and cables falls. Cross-sections are recalculated with a correction factor based on the highest expected ambient temperature.

Dust protection and thermal balance

Raising the degree of protection makes natural ventilation more difficult. Filtered ventilation, internal layout and the position of heat-generating components are optimised together to preserve thermal balance.

Branch circuit measurement and PUE

Measuring IT load and mechanical load separately is the basis of PUE calculation. Branch-level measurement infrastructure in the PDU supply panels provides that separation in hardware.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How should switchboard architecture be organised in a Tier III data centre?

Tier III requires concurrent maintainability, which means every critical load must be fed from two independent distribution paths. In practice two separate main distribution boards, designated A and B, are installed, and these paths share no common component at any point. When one path is under maintenance the other carries the full load.

How does switchboard design change on hot-climate sites?

Two topics dominate: derating and dust protection. As ambient temperature rises, the current-carrying capacity of busbars and cables falls, so cross-sections are increased. The degree of protection is raised against dust ingress, but because heat dissipation then becomes harder, filtered ventilation and internal layout are redesigned.

What is the installed power on this project?

For the Mauritania Data Center the installed power is approximately 4,000 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 2,000 kVA and generator back-up in the order of 2 x 1,500 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 3,200 A per path.
