Karaköy Hüdavendigar Han Hilton — Historic Building Hotel Switchboard Project

Karaköy Hüdavendigar Han Hilton is a project realised by converting a historic han building into a hotel. On this project Devpan manufactured the compact boards adapted to the volume of the existing building, the guest room floor boards and the technical area supplies.

About the Project

About the Project

When historic buildings are given a new function, the electrical infrastructure has to work alongside the decisions of the conservation board. Wall thicknesses, the structural system and the architectural elements that have to be preserved place direct limits on cable routes and on the position of the switchroom.

At Karaköy Hüdavendigar Han Hilton the switchroom is placed in the most suitable volume the existing building allows, and the enclosure dimensions are set by that volume. Cable routes are planned so that they do not intrude on visible surfaces. On the guest room floors the installation must remain accessible without harming the historic fabric, so the floor boards are positioned in the service corridors and maintenance access is separated from guest circulation.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from compact main distribution to the guest room floor boards and the technical area supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 1,600 A class, 50 kA / 1 s, main distribution with a compact enclosure adapted to the existing volume.
  • Guest room floor boards (DevBox): Front-access sub-distribution positioned in the service corridors.
  • Kitchen and technical area branches: Separately metered enclosure solutions suited to a restricted volume.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Space-saving detuned stepped compensation.
  • Lighting panels (DevPower): Courtyard, façade and architectural lighting together with the emergency lighting circuits.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Adapting to the volume of the existing building

Board dimensions are set by the volume the existing space allows; the enclosure depth is reduced while the form of internal separation is maintained.

Cable routes and conservation constraints

Visible historic surfaces are left untouched; routes are planned through service shafts and suspended ceiling voids, and cross-sections are selected against the actual route length.

Separating maintenance access

The floor boards are placed in the service corridors, so technical staff can intervene without passing through guest areas.

Architectural lighting circuits

Courtyard and façade lighting is collected on a dedicated branch and can be controlled in steps according to scene settings.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is switchboard design approached in historic building conversions?

The design starts from the existing building. The volume of the switchroom, the cable routes and the access points are determined by the structure, and the board is sized to those constraints. Even where the enclosure depth has to be reduced, the form of internal separation is maintained, because maintenance safety is not a topic on which to compromise.

What is the installed power at Karaköy Hüdavendigar Han Hilton?

A boutique hotel project of this scale has an installed power of approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,250 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 1,600 A.

Why are the floor boards placed in the service corridors?

For two reasons: maintenance staff must be able to intervene without passing through guest areas, and in historic buildings placing technical equipment in visible spaces is architecturally undesirable. A service corridor satisfies both requirements.
