Shamakhi Resort Project — Hotel & Resort Switchboard Project

The Shamakhi Resort Project is a hotel and resort set in the mountainous Shamakhi region of Azerbaijan. Devpan supplied the main distribution boards, MCCs and sub-distribution boards for the project.

About the Project

About the Project

Mountain resorts often sit at the far end of the utility network, where long supply lines bring voltage drop and short interruptions. Guest experience, however, tolerates no outages: kitchens, pool and spa systems, air conditioning and lifts must keep running. Shamakhi lies in a seismically active area, which calls for extra care in anchoring switchboard enclosures and keeping cable connections flexible. Seasonal occupancy swings also change the load profile considerably over the year.

At this scale a typical arrangement uses approximately 2 × 1,600 kVA transformers fed from the 10 kV network. DevPanel boards with a 2 × 2,500 A main busbar and Form 3b-4a segregation run as two half-busbars; in low season one transformer can be switched off to cut losses. DevControl MCCs control pool filtration, heating and chilled water pumps and air handling units. DevBox and DevPower boards feed guest blocks, restaurants and landscape lighting, and a generator of around 1,000 kVA keeps guest comfort and safety loads running during outages.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope covers the resort’s low-voltage distribution, from the main boards to the guest blocks and outdoor lighting.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 2,500 A main busbar, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 3b-4a, bus coupler and generator changeover.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): feeders for pool and spa systems, circulation pumps and air handling units.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): floor and zone boards for guest blocks, kitchens, restaurants and plant rooms.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): scene-controlled circuits for landscape, pathway and facade lighting.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): automatic stepped compensation that follows variable occupancy.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

End-of-line supply

Voltage monitoring relays and generator changeover logic are designed together to cope with fluctuations on long supply lines.

Seismic resilience

Enclosures are anchored to floor and wall, and busbar and cable connections are kept flexible to accommodate ground movement.

Seasonal load management

The two-transformer arrangement allows single-transformer operation in low season, reducing no-load losses.

Kitchen and spa loads

High-power kitchen equipment and spa heaters are fed from dedicated circuits with residual current protection for safety.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power of a hotel on the scale of the Shamakhi Resort Project?

For a resort hotel of this scale the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is typically rated 2 × 2,500 A with a withstand of 65 kA / 1 s, and the medium-voltage level is 10 kV.

Which loads stay powered during a grid outage?

Typically a generator of around 1,000 kVA takes over lifts, emergency lighting, fire systems, kitchen cold rooms and essential guest comfort loads.

What measures are taken for switchboards in a seismic zone?

Enclosures are firmly anchored, heavy equipment is placed low in the board, and flexible connections accommodate movement of busbars and cables.
