About the Project
A general hospital combines very different loads in a single building: imaging equipment, laboratories, sterilisation units, lifts, kitchens and laundries, medical gas plant and large air handling systems. In Moscow’s climate, heating and ventilation loads become decisive during the winter months. All of these must be supplied from a single 10 kV connection and separated according to how much interruption each can tolerate.
At this scale, low-voltage distribution is usually built around a two-section main board fed by two transformers. Loads are split into normal, safety and uninterruptible classes: safety loads are backed by the generator, while the most critical medical circuits are connected to UPS systems. Feeders to clinical blocks are coordinated with selective protection so that a fault in one department does not affect the rest. A Form 3b to Form 4a construction allows maintenance without shutting the hospital down.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
Devpan supplied the low-voltage system from the hospital’s main distribution down to the departmental sub-boards.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): two-section 2 × 2,500 A busbars, 65 kA / 1 s, automatic transfer and bus coupling.
- Motor control centres (DevControl): motor feeders for HVAC, the heating plant and medical gas systems.
- Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): distribution for outpatient, laboratory, imaging and ward floors.
- Power factor correction (DevComp): reactive power management with harmonic filtering.
- Lighting and power panels (DevPower): corridor, patient room and emergency lighting circuits.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Load classification
Normal, safety and uninterruptible loads are grouped on separate busbars, each linked to its own backup source.
Selective protection
Time and current discrimination between breakers ensures that only the protective device nearest to a fault trips.
Supplying imaging equipment
MRI and CT scanners are fed from dedicated outgoers sized for inrush current and voltage drop.
Winter continuity
Heating plant and ventilation motors are planned as priority loads that remain supplied during generator operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the installed power of Skolkovo Hospital No. 62?
For a hospital of this scale, the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,600 kVA. Main busbars are typically rated 2 × 2,500 A with 65 kA / 1 s withstand, supplied at 10 kV and backed by a 1 × 1,000 kVA generator.
Why are hospital loads divided into classes?
Each load tolerates interruption differently. Classification means generator and UPS capacity is reserved for the circuits that truly need it.
How does imaging equipment affect distribution design?
These devices draw high inrush current and are sensitive to voltage drop, so they are usually fed by dedicated, generously sized cables directly from the main board.
