About the Project

About the Project

In transport buildings the first priority of the electrical infrastructure is passenger safety. Passenger information displays, the public address system, lighting and escalators must run without interruption for the service pattern to continue. In the event of an interruption, the evacuation lighting and the wayfinding systems have to take over.

At Dakar Railway Station the passenger information and public address systems are fed from a branch backed by an uninterruptible power supply. The platform lighting is divided into groups, so a fault in one group does not black out the platform entirely. Because of the tropical climate the enclosure surface treatment, the condensation control and the ventilation arrangement are planned separately. The medium voltage inside the site is at 20 kV.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the platform and passenger area panels.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Passenger information and public address branch: A separately protected supply backed by an uninterruptible power supply.
  • Platform and passenger area panels (DevBox): Lighting branches divided into groups and socket outlet circuits.
  • Motor control (DevControl): Escalator, ventilation and pump groups.
  • Compensation (DevComp) and lighting (DevPower): Detuned compensation, platform, car park and evacuation lighting.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Continuity of passenger information

The information displays and the public address system are fed from a branch backed by an uninterruptible power supply; service information reaches passengers even during an interruption.

Grouping of the platform lighting

The lighting branches are divided into groups; a fault in one group does not black out the whole platform and passenger safety is maintained.

Enclosure protection in a tropical climate

Because of the high humidity and temperature the surface treatment is raised, a heater is used against condensation and the ventilation is calculated for a high ambient temperature.

Escalator safety

Escalator motors are planned together with the emergency stop chain; the supply branch is protected separately and a controlled stop is ensured in the event of a fault.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which systems are fed from an uninterruptible supply in transport buildings?

Passenger information displays, the public address system and the security infrastructure are fed from an uninterruptible power supply. During an interruption, getting service information and wayfinding to passengers is the most critical element of crowd management; even a gap of a few seconds is unacceptable for these systems.

What is the installed power for Dakar Railway Station?

For a transport building of this scale the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A and the medium voltage inside the site is at 20 kV.

Why is the platform lighting divided into groups?

For passenger safety. A fault in lighting collected on a single branch would leave the platform completely dark and put passenger circulation at risk. Branches divided into groups keep the greater part of the platform lit in the event of a fault.
