About the Project

About the Project

On technology campuses the electrical infrastructure comes closer to the logic of a data centre than to that of an office building. Laboratories, test rooms and server cabinets require an uninterruptible supply; because these loads also run continuously, the cooling demand is high as well.

At the Huawei Project the distribution is arranged in three layers: normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible. The server and test cabinets are collected on the uninterruptible busbar and monitored with circuit-level metering. Because of the density of switched-mode power supplies the third harmonic component is high; the neutral cross-section is increased and the compensation is specified as detuned. The cooling plant is fed from a dedicated motor control centre.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the data and test room panels and the cooling motor control centre.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 3,200 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Uninterruptible and generator branches: Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible supplies collected on separate busbars.
  • Data and test room panels (DevBox): Cabinet supply distribution with circuit-level metering.
  • Cooling motor control centre (DevControl): Variable speed drive outgoing ways for the chillers, air handling units and pump sets.
  • Compensation (DevComp) and lighting (DevPower): Detuned compensation, office and outdoor lighting.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

A three-layer supply architecture

Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible branches are collected on separate busbars; every load is fed from the continuity class it requires and the transfer between layers is controlled by interlocking logic.

Circuit-level metering

Circuit-level metering infrastructure is provided at the cabinet supplies; the IT load and the mechanical load can be monitored separately and efficiency indicators can be calculated.

Third harmonic and neutral cross-section

Switched-mode power supplies generate a third harmonic; this component adds up in the neutral, so the neutral cross-section is selected equal to or larger than the phase cross-section.

Cooling for a continuously running load

Test and server cabinets generate heat continuously; the cooling plant is fed from a dedicated motor control centre in a way that keeps it efficient at part load.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the supply on technology campuses built in three layers?

Because the interruption times the loads can tolerate differ. Office lighting can wait until the generator takes over, whereas server and test cabinets cannot tolerate an interruption even of milliseconds. Collecting the normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible layers on separate busbars ensures that every load is fed from the right source.

What is the installed power for the Huawei Project?

For a technology campus of this scale the installed power is approximately 6,400 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 3,200 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.

Is the supply requirement of the test rooms different from the server room?

It is different. The server room draws a stable and predictable load, whereas the rigs in the test rooms are switched in and out and sometimes draw an impulsive current. The test room branches are therefore protected separately and the protection settings are selected for the transient current character of the rigs.
