About the Project
In a stadium, the electrical system reaches full load within a short window on match days and directly affects the safety of tens of thousands of spectators. High-power floodlights, scoreboards, broadcast areas, HVAC and pumping systems all run at the same time. Dakar’s hot, humid coastal climate, salt-laden air and interruptions that can occur on the 30 kV distribution network make both equipment robustness and redundant supply arrangements critical.
For a stadium of this scale, a typical arrangement is a 2 × 3,200 A main distribution board fed by four 1,600 kVA transformers and split into two halves by a bus coupler. Floodlights are distributed across two separate supply paths through DevPower panels, so a single fault never blacks out the pitch. Two 1,250 kVA generators protect evacuation lighting, fire and security systems; DevControl panels manage pump and fan sets, and DevComp balances the power factor.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
Devpan’s scope covers low-voltage distribution from the transformer outgoing ways to the floodlights, stands and service-area boards.
- Pitch lighting and power panels (DevPower): floodlight groups, stand, concourse and evacuation lighting.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 3,200 A, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4a – Form 4b, with bus coupler and generator changeover.
- Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): dressing rooms, media and broadcast areas, hospitality boxes and kiosks.
- Power factor correction (DevComp): detuned compensation for floodlight and HVAC loads.
- Motor control centres (DevControl): fire and domestic water pumps, ventilation and drainage systems.

Devpan Products Used in This Project
Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Dual-fed pitch lighting
Floodlight groups are split between two independent busbars, so part of the pitch stays lit if a transformer or feeder is lost.
Spectator evacuation safety
Escape routes and emergency lighting are fed from a generator-backed priority section.
Coastal climate resilience
Enclosures are selected with suitable surface protection and ventilation for salty, humid air.
Broadcast supplies
Dedicated, metered and selectively protected outgoing ways are reserved for OB vans and media centres.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the installed power for Dakar Stadium?
For a stadium of this scale the installed power is approximately 6,400 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is planned at 2 × 3,200 A with 65 kA / 1 s withstand, on a 30 kV MV supply, and standby power comes from 2 × 1,250 kVA generators.
How is pitch lighting protected against outages?
Floodlights are shared between two separate busbars and critical groups are connected to the generator-backed section, so the pitch never goes completely dark and spectator safety is maintained.
Why is Form 4 separation used in stadium switchboards?
Form 4a – Form 4b separation allows work on one outgoing way during pre-match preparation or maintenance while the other circuits remain live.
