About the Project

About the Project

A multidisciplinary medical centre brings high-power imaging equipment such as MRI, CT and angiography together with sensitive laboratory instruments and intensive HVAC loads under one roof. Imaging systems create both inrush peaks and harmonic distortion, while Moscow’s cold climate keeps heating and ventilation running at high load for most of the year. For a centre of this scale the installed power is typically around 6,400 kVA. The distribution system must limit voltage disturbances at medical equipment and allow each department’s supply to be managed independently of the others.

The typical approach uses four 1,600 kVA transformers fed from the 10 kV network and a 2 × 3,200 A main distribution board split by a bus coupler. Imaging equipment is supplied through dedicated direct feeders from the main board to minimise voltage drop. Detuned power factor correction balances reactive power and suppresses harmonics at the same time. A 2 × 1,250 kVA generator capacity and uninterruptible power supplies on critical circuits keep diagnostics and treatment unaffected by grid events, and Form 4a – Form 4b construction allows department-by-department maintenance.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan supplied the full low-voltage switchboard infrastructure, from the main distribution down to departmental boards.

  • Main distribution (DevPanel): 2 × 3,200 A, 65 kA / 1 s, with dedicated direct feeders for imaging equipment.
  • Motor control (DevControl): Motor feeders for cleanroom ventilation, cooling and medical gas systems.
  • Departmental boards (DevBox): Sub-distribution for outpatient clinics, laboratories and inpatient wards.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Automatic stepped compensation with harmonic detuning.
  • Lighting panels (DevPower): General, emergency and wayfinding lighting supplies.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Imaging equipment feeders

MRI and CT units are supplied by separate, low-impedance feeders from the main board so that their load surges do not affect other consumers.

Medical IT systems

Dedicated outgoing circuits are planned for isolated IT networks and insulation monitoring devices in Group 2 medical locations.

Energy monitoring

Meters in the main and departmental boards pass per-department consumption and power quality data to the building management system.

Cold-climate operation

Heating and ventilation loads stay high throughout winter, so they are treated as continuous loads when sizing busbars and breakers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power for a medical centre like Skolkovo?

For a medical centre of this scale the installed power is approximately 6,400 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is typically 2 × 3,200 A with a 65 kA / 1 s short-time rating, on a 10 kV medium-voltage supply.

Why are imaging systems fed from separate circuits?

MRI and CT units draw brief high currents; separate low-impedance feeders limit voltage drop and protect other medical equipment from disturbance.

Why is detuned compensation chosen for medical centres?

Drives and imaging equipment generate harmonics; detuned compensation avoids resonance while keeping the power factor at its target value.
