About the Project

About the Project

Operating theatres and intensive care units carry the most sensitive electrical loads in any hospital. Anaesthesia machines, ventilators, patient monitors and surgical lights cannot tolerate even brief interruptions. Moscow’s long, severe winters also mean that heating, ventilation and cleanroom air handling draw significant load all year round. On the utility side, faults or maintenance outages on the 10 kV distribution network must be absorbed by the building’s own backup architecture rather than passed on to patients.

For a facility of this scale, the typical answer is a low-voltage distribution split across two transformers and two main busbars. A bus coupler allows the load of a failed transformer to be transferred to the healthy one. Critical medical loads are grouped on a dedicated safety busbar, fed by the standby generator and uninterruptible power supplies. Form 3b to Form 4a internal separation lets technicians work on one functional unit while neighbouring circuits stay energised.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope covers the complete low-voltage distribution, from the transformer outgoers to the boards serving the surgical and ICU floors.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 2,500 A main busbars, 65 kA / 1 s withstand, bus coupler and generator transfer scheme.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): starters and variable speed drives for air handling units, chillers and pumps.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): floor-level distribution for theatres, ICU wards and support areas.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): detuned, stepped reactive power compensation.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): general and emergency lighting plus socket circuits.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Critical load segregation

Life-support equipment is grouped on a busbar separate from general loads, so faults or overloads elsewhere do not reach critical circuits.

Dual transformers with coupler

Each transformer normally feeds its own busbar; if one is lost, the coupler closes and the remaining unit carries the essential load.

Generator and UPS coordination

UPS systems bridge the seconds until the generator is online, and transfer sequencing starts with the highest-priority loads.

Harmonic control

Harmonics from imaging equipment and variable speed drives are limited by detuned power factor correction.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power of the Skolkovo Operating Theatre and Intensive Care Building?

For a surgical and intensive care building of this scale, the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,600 kVA. Main busbars are typically rated 2 × 2,500 A at 10 kV medium voltage, backed by a 1 × 1,000 kVA standby generator.

Why do operating theatres need a UPS?

A generator needs several seconds to start and take load. During that gap, the UPS keeps ventilators, anaesthesia machines and monitors running without interruption.

What does Form 4a separation bring to a hospital?

Each functional unit and its terminals sit in separate compartments, so one outgoing circuit can be serviced while the others remain live, preserving continuity of care.
