About the Project

About the Project

In a children’s hospital, intensive care, neonatal units and operating theatres cannot tolerate even a short interruption. Moscow’s 10 kV urban network is generally dependable, yet the long, harsh winters place heavy and sustained demand on heating, ventilation and pumping systems. For a hospital of this scale the installed power is typically around 6,400 kVA, and a large share of the load consists of medical devices and sensitive electronics. The distribution architecture therefore has to combine high continuity of supply with selective isolation of any fault, so that a local problem never becomes a building-wide outage.

The typical answer is a split main distribution board rated 2 × 3,200 A, fed from four 1,600 kVA transformers and divided by a bus coupler. If a transformer or incoming feeder is lost, the coupler transfers the load to the healthy section. A 2 × 1,250 kVA generator set picks up life-safety loads in a defined priority order, while theatre and ICU circuits are bridged by uninterruptible power supplies. Form 4a – Form 4b segregation lets maintenance proceed on one functional unit while neighbouring outgoing circuits stay energised.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope covers the low-voltage system from the transformer outgoing terminals to the final distribution points on the clinical floors.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 3,200 A, 65 kA / 1 s, dual section with bus coupler and generator changeover.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): Drive and starter feeders for air handling units, chillers and heating pumps.
  • Floor and service boards (DevBox): Sub-distribution for clinical floors, laboratories and administrative areas.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Stepped, detuned reactive power compensation.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): General and emergency lighting circuits plus small power supplies.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Redundant supply with bus coupler

Two independent busbar sections are linked by a coupler breaker, so a transformer failure is covered by automatically transferring load to the other section.

Life-safety load priority

When the generators start, ICU, theatre and neonatal loads are restored first and secondary loads follow in stages.

Selectivity across levels

Protective devices from the main board down to floor boards are coordinated so that a fault opens only the affected circuit.

Harmonics and power quality

Harmonics from imaging equipment and variable speed drives are limited by detuned compensation, keeping voltage quality within limits.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power for a hospital like St. Vladimir Children’s Clinical Hospital?

For a children’s hospital of this scale the installed power is approximately 6,400 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is typically 2 × 3,200 A with a short-time withstand of 65 kA / 1 s, fed from a 10 kV medium-voltage network.

How is the hospital supplied during a grid outage?

Typically a 2 × 1,250 kVA generator set starts through automatic changeover, while critical clinical circuits ride through the generator start-up on uninterruptible power supplies.

Why is Form 4 segregation used in hospital switchboards?

Form 4a – Form 4b segregation allows work on one outgoing unit while the others remain energised, so clinical services continue during maintenance.
