Georgia Sports Hall — Indoor Sports Hall Switchboard Project

Georgia Sports Hall is an indoor sports hall serving competition and training use together. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution boards along with the hall lighting, scoreboard and sound system branches.

About the Project

About the Project

In indoor sports halls lighting is the most decisive item of the electrical load. A medium illuminance level is enough for the training routine, whereas for a televised match the illuminance level and freedom from flicker are defined by federation criteria. Both scenarios have to be met in the same facility.

At the Georgia Sports Hall the lighting is arranged in stages: training, competition and broadcast levels are energised from separate groups. The scoreboard, the sound system and the timing equipment are sensitive to interruption and are therefore collected on a separately protected branch. Because of spectator evacuation, the emergency lighting and the public address system are protected independently. The medium voltage inside the site is at 10 kV.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the hall lighting and technical system panels.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 1,600 A class, 50 kA / 1 s, main distribution with Form 3b internal separation.
  • Hall lighting panels (DevPower): Staged lighting groups separated according to the training, competition and broadcast levels.
  • Scoreboard and sound system branch: A separately protected supply for equipment sensitive to interruption.
  • Changing room and plant room panels (DevBox): Separately metered supply and wet area protection.
  • Motor control (DevControl) and compensation (DevComp): Ventilation and heating groups, detuned compensation.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Staged lighting scenarios

Training, competition and broadcast levels are energised from separate groups; because no unnecessary lighting is switched on, energy consumption scales with the way the hall is used.

Flicker-free light for broadcast

Televised matches require light that is free of flicker; the lighting groups are distributed with phase balance in mind and the luminaire drivers are selected accordingly.

Scoreboard and timing equipment

The scoreboard, the sound system and the timing equipment are sensitive to interruption; they are collected on a separately protected branch and, where required, transferred to an uninterruptible supply.

Protection in wet areas

In the changing rooms and shower areas the supply branches are equipped with residual current protection; equipotential bonding is verified in addition.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is lighting in indoor sports halls arranged in stages?

Because the same hall requires a different illuminance level in different scenarios. A medium level is enough for training, while federation criteria apply to a televised match. Staged groups make sure that only the luminaires actually needed operate in each scenario, so energy consumption scales with use.

What is the installed power for the Georgia Sports Hall?

For an indoor sports hall of this scale the installed power is approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,250 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 1,600 A and the medium voltage inside the site is at 10 kV.

How is flicker-free lighting achieved for broadcast?

Two elements work together: selecting luminaire drivers of a high-frequency, flicker-free type, and distributing the lighting groups evenly across the three phases. Where the phase balance is poor, banding can appear in the image on high-speed cameras.
