Homs Hospital — Healthcare Switchboard Project

Homs Hospital is a healthcare building housing operating theatres and intensive care units. On this project Devpan manufactured the Form 4b main distribution boards, the generator and uninterruptible power branches, the medical IT system supply and the departmental panels.

About the Project

About the Project

In regions where network continuity is limited, hospital design treats an interruption as an ordinary condition rather than an exception. The generator is not a back-up solution but a regular part of the operation, while the uninterruptible power supply covers the interval until the generator picks up.

At Homs Hospital the distribution is built in three layers. In group 2 medical locations such as operating theatres and intensive care, a medical IT system with an isolating transformer is used; a first earth fault does not disconnect the supply, it only raises an alarm. The generator pick-up sequence is planned according to the medical priority classes. The main distribution is built with Form 4b internal separation, so that the other departments stay energised while maintenance is carried out on one branch.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the departmental panels and the medical IT panels.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Generator and uninterruptible power branches: Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible supplies collected on separate busbars.
  • Medical IT panels: Isolating transformer supply for operating theatres and intensive care, with insulation monitoring device and alarm panel.
  • Departmental and floor panels (DevBox): Outpatient, laboratory, imaging and administrative floor panels.
  • Motor control (DevControl) and power factor correction (DevComp): HVAC, medical gas compressors, pump sets and detuned compensation.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Pick-up sequence by medical priority class

During an interruption the generator first feeds the operating theatres, intensive care and the emergency department, then the remaining units; staged pick-up limits the step load on the generator.

Medical IT system and insulation monitoring

In group 2 locations an IT system is formed with an isolating transformer; a first earth fault does not disconnect the supply and the insulation monitoring device reports to the panel inside the theatre.

Generator-led operation

On sites where network continuity is limited the generator is planned as a regular source; fuel management and the maintenance interval are part of the design.

Form 4b and service continuity

Separating each outgoing unit with its own cable termination volume allows the other medical departments to stay energised while maintenance is carried out on a single branch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the generator pick-up sequence determined in hospitals?

It is determined by the medical priority classes. Operating theatres, intensive care and the emergency department are in the first group; imaging and the laboratories are picked up second and the administrative units third. Staged pick-up also prevents the generator being stressed by a sudden step load.

What is the installed power for Homs Hospital?

For a hospital of this scale the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A and the medium voltage inside the site is at 11 kV.

How does hospital design change in regions with frequent network interruptions?

The generator is planned as a regular source rather than a back-up: its capacity is selected to carry the full load of the facility, the fuel tank is sized for a long running time and load prioritisation is defined from the outset. The uninterruptible power supply then only covers the interval until the generator picks up.
