About the Project
In hospitals in hot climate regions two difficulties combine: the requirement for medical continuity and the effect of extreme temperature on the equipment. On sites where the ambient temperature stays high for long periods, the temperature rise inside the switchboard directly affects equipment life and current-carrying capacity.
At Iraq Al-Kansah Hospital the busbar and cable cross-sections are enlarged by applying a correction factor for the highest expected ambient temperature. Air conditioning of the switchrooms is treated as part of the design. On the medical side a three-layer continuity architecture is built, and a medical IT system with an isolating transformer is used for the operating theatres and intensive care. The cooling load is the item that sets the peak load of the facility.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the departmental panels, the medical IT panels and the mechanical services motor outgoing ways.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with derating applied.
- Generator and uninterruptible power branches: Three-layer supply segregated by medical priority class.
- Medical IT panels: Isolating transformer supply and insulation monitoring for operating theatres and intensive care.
- Motor control centres (DevControl): Chiller sets, air handling units and medical gas compressors.
- Departmental panels (DevBox) and power factor correction (DevComp): Outpatient and laboratory panels, detuned compensation.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Derating at high ambient temperature
As the temperature rises the current-carrying capacity of busbars and cables falls. Cross-sections are enlarged with a correction factor for the highest expected ambient temperature.
Switchroom air conditioning
The power loss inside the boards raises the room temperature; the air conditioning load of the switchroom is calculated and addressed together with the mechanical design.
Dominance of the cooling load
In a hot climate cooling is the item that sets the peak load of the hospital; motor control centre and transformer selection follow that scenario.
Medical continuity layers
Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible branches are collected on separate busbars; in group 2 locations a medical IT system with an isolating transformer is installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are hospital switchboards sized in a hot climate?
Sizing follows the highest expected ambient temperature: busbar and cable cross-sections are enlarged with a correction factor, the air conditioning load of the switchroom is calculated and the heat-producing components are distributed within the enclosure. A design based on standard temperature assumptions falls short under these conditions.
What is the installed power for Iraq Al-Kansah Hospital?
For a hospital of this scale the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A and the medium voltage inside the site is at 11 kV.
Why is a medical IT system necessary?
In group 2 medical locations such as operating theatres and intensive care, a first earth fault must not disconnect the supply. The IT system formed with an isolating transformer achieves exactly that: the supply continues during the fault, the insulation monitoring device only raises an alarm and the intervention can be planned.
