İstanbul Anatolium Mall — Shopping Centre Switchboard Project

İstanbul Anatolium Mall is a shopping centre housing a large number of tenant units and extensive common areas. On this project Devpan supplied the Form 4b main distribution boards, the tenant supply panels, the cooling motor control centres and the compensation systems.

About the Project

About the Project

In shopping centres the electrical infrastructure serves two different operating logics at once. On one side are the tenants: independent businesses, each responsible for its own consumption and each with its own opening schedule. On the other is the centre management: common area lighting, air conditioning, car park and security.

At İstanbul Anatolium Mall these two logics are divided into separate branches in the main board. Thanks to Form 4b internal separation the tenant branches operate independently of one another; a fit-out in one tenant unit does not affect the neighbouring shops. The cooling plant is fed from a separate motor control centre and arranged with variable frequency drives so that it runs efficiently at part load.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the tenant unit panels and the common area and mechanical services supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 4,000 A class, withstanding 80 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Tenant supply panels (DevBox): Tenant-level metering and protection, with a staged store commissioning arrangement.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): Cooling plant, air handling units, car park fans and smoke extraction.
  • Common area panels (DevPower): Gallery lighting, car park, façade and emergency lighting circuits.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp) and energy monitoring: Detuned compensation and collection of tenant-level measurement data.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Separating tenant and management loads

The tenant units and the common area loads belonging to the centre management are collected on separate branches in the main board; metering, protection and responsibility never become entangled.

Form 4b and tenant fit-out

Because every tenant outgoing way is separated together with its own cable termination volume, the neighbouring shops stay energised while a unit is being fitted out.

Cooling efficiency at part load

The cooling plant is fed from variable frequency drive outgoing ways; since the shopping centre load varies widely over the day, part load efficiency has a marked effect on total consumption.

Staged store commissioning

The shops do not open at the same time; the commissioning sequence is planned around the opening schedule and every unit is energised independently with its own metering.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are tenant and management loads separated in shopping centre switchboards?

Because there are two distinct areas of responsibility. The tenant is responsible for its own consumption and is billed separately, while the centre management runs common area consumption and passes it on to the tenants as a service charge. Separate branches in the main board make that division electrically definite.

What is the installed power at İstanbul Anatolium Mall?

A shopping centre of this scale has an installed power of approximately 8,000 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 x 2,000 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 4,000 A with a short-time withstand current of 80 kA / 1 s.

Why are variable frequency drives used on cooling plant?

Because the cooling load of a shopping centre varies widely over the day and between seasons. A variable frequency drive runs the cooling plant only as far as demand requires, giving marked energy savings at part load; controlled starting also reduces mechanical stress.
