About the Project

About the Project

In the offices of technology companies the load profile differs markedly from a conventional office building. The IT load per person is high, test and demonstration areas are energised continuously, and the data room and the laboratories require an uninterruptible supply.

At the İstanbul Samsung Building distribution is arranged in three layers: normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible. The data room and laboratory cabinets are collected on the uninterruptible busbar and monitored with circuit-level metering. Because of the density of switch-mode power supplies the third harmonic component is high; the neutral conductor is enlarged accordingly and compensation is specified with detuned reactors.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the floor panels and the data room and laboratory supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4a internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Uninterruptible and generator branches: Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible supplies collected on separate busbars.
  • Data room and laboratory panels (DevBox): Cabinet supply distribution with circuit-level metering.
  • Floor and office panels: Distribution with an enlarged neutral, suited to a high density of socket outlets.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp) and motor control (DevControl): Detuned compensation, ventilation and cooling outgoing ways.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Third harmonic and neutral sizing

Heavy use of switch-mode power supplies generates third harmonic currents; rather than cancelling between the three phases, this component accumulates in the neutral. The neutral is sized equal to or larger than the phase conductors.

Circuit-level metering for the data room

Circuit-level metering infrastructure is provided on the cabinet supplies, so that the IT load and the mechanical load can be monitored separately.

Three-layer supply separation

Normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible branches are collected on separate busbars; every load is fed from the continuity class it requires.

Laboratory and test area loads

Continuously energised test rigs are placed on separately protected branches; a fault on the office side does not affect the continuity of testing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the neutral conductor enlarged in technology offices?

Because computer and monitor power supplies generate third harmonic currents. The third harmonic component does not cancel between the three phases but accumulates in the neutral conductor, where the current can exceed the phase current. The neutral is therefore sized equal to or larger than the phase conductors.

What is the installed power at the İstanbul Samsung Building?

A technology office of this scale has an installed power of approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 2,500 A.

What does circuit-level metering achieve on a data room supply?

It allows the IT load to be measured separately from the mechanical load. That separation both provides the basis for calculating efficiency indicators and makes abnormal consumption in a group of cabinets easy to notice quickly.
