İstanbul Atlas University — Campus Switchboard Project

The İstanbul Atlas University campus brings teaching blocks, laboratories, administrative units and clinical practice areas onto one energy backbone. Devpan manufactured the campus main distribution boards, block sub-distribution boards, compensation systems and lighting panels for the project.

About the Project

About the Project

On university campuses the load profile fluctuates widely through the day and across the academic calendar. Lighting and ventilation peak during teaching hours, while the site is close to empty during holidays. Laboratories, server rooms and clinical practice areas nevertheless require uninterrupted supply.

Campuses are also geographically dispersed. The distance between blocks demands a separate study for voltage drop along the rising mains and for earth fault coordination. Campus distribution is therefore resolved with a two-stage architecture: a central main board and block-level sub-distribution boards, so each block can be monitored on its own and isolated when required.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope covers the low voltage chain from campus main distribution to block and floor panels. Metering per block and the ability to isolate individual buildings are the governing criteria.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class campus main distribution, 65 kA / 1 s, with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Block sub-distribution boards (DevBox): Separately metered sub-distribution for teaching, laboratory and administrative blocks.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned, automatically stepped compensation matched to the variable load profile.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): Classroom lighting, external and campus road lighting, emergency lighting circuits.
  • Generator branches: Segregated back-up supply for laboratories, server rooms and clinical practice areas.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Fluctuating load profile and compensation

Campus load varies substantially by hour and by season. Compensation stages are sized in small steps so that light-load conditions do not lead to over-compensation.

Distance between blocks and voltage drop

On long feeders, cable cross-section is selected against the voltage drop limit rather than current-carrying capacity alone. Sub-distribution board positions are optimised against that calculation.

Continuity for laboratories and server rooms

Experimental rigs and data rooms are fed from the generator-backed branch, while UPS outgoing ways are collected on a separate busbar and segregated from normal loads.

High occupancy and escape lighting

Because of high user density, emergency lighting and wayfinding circuits are protected separately and planned independently of normal lighting so that they remain energised in a fire scenario.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is switchboard architecture organised on university campuses?

Campuses use a two-stage architecture: a central main distribution board and a dedicated sub-distribution board for each block. This structure prevents a fault in one block from affecting the others and allows consumption to be measured per block.

What is the installed power for the Atlas University campus?

For a campus of this scale the installed power is approximately 4,800 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 3 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.

Which form of separation is used in educational buildings?

Campus main distribution boards are typically specified between Form 3b and Form 4a. Form 4b may be selected for outage-sensitive areas such as laboratories and clinical practice facilities.
