Kervansaray, Turkistan — Tourism & Hospitality Complex Switchboard Project

Kervansaray is a tourism, hotel and leisure complex in Turkistan, Kazakhstan, close to the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Devpan supplied the distribution chain from Dev24/36 MV cells to main LV boards, power factor correction and lighting panels.

About the Project

About the Project

Turkistan has a sharply continental climate with very hot summers, which pushes cooling demand to its peak exactly when switchboard interiors run hottest. A complex combining guest rooms, restaurants, pools and leisure areas also has a load profile that swings quickly through the day. Near the historic centre, in a building inspired by caravanserai architecture, facade and landscape lighting is part of the guest experience itself. All of this must be supplied continuously, without compromising voltage quality.

In a typical architecture the 10 kV utility supply is distributed through Dev24/36 modular MV cells to two transformers of approximately 1,600 kVA each. On the LV side, DevPanel main boards with a 2 × 2,500 A busbar, 50 kA / 1 s withstand and Form 3b separation run as two half-busbars with a bus coupler. A generator of roughly 1,000 kVA carries lifts, safety systems and guest-critical loads. DevComp panels manage reactive power, while DevBox and DevPower boards complete block-level and lighting distribution.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope covers the full distribution chain, from the MV incomer to guest blocks and feature lighting.

  • MV switchgear (Dev24/36): 10 kV service, 24 kV rated insulation, 630 A busbar, 20 kA / 1 s; incomer, metering and transformer protection cells.
  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2 × 2,500 A main busbar, 50 kA / 1 s Icw, Form 3b, IP41, with bus coupler and generator transfer.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned, stepped capacitor banks for a high power factor and low harmonic stress.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): Floor and zone distribution for guest blocks, restaurants, kitchens and plant rooms.
  • Lighting & power panels (DevPower): Facade, landscape and public-area lighting circuits ready for scene control.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

MV/LV protection coordination

Transformer protection relays in the Dev24/36 cells are graded against the LV main breakers, so a fault on one feeder isolates only its own section.

Derating for hot summers

Busbar and breaker ratings are corrected for Turkistan’s high summer ambient temperatures, and board ventilation is sized accordingly.

Voltage quality for guest comfort

Detuned power factor correction and balanced phase loading prevent flicker in LED facade lighting and nuisance faults in sensitive equipment.

Remote-site logistics and commissioning

Boards are fully factory tested and split into shipping sections, shortening installation and commissioning time on site.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the installed power for Kervansaray, Turkistan?

For a tourism and hospitality complex of this scale the installed power is approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is typically rated 2 × 2,500 A with a 50 kA / 1 s short-time withstand, fed from a 10 kV MV network.

How is the hotel supplied during a grid outage?

Typically a generator of approximately 1,000 kVA starts and takes over via automatic transfer, prioritising lifts, safety systems, emergency lighting and critical kitchen loads.

Which standards do the switchboards follow?

The LV boards are type-tested to IEC 61439-1 / -2, built with Form 3b internal separation and an IP41 degree of protection.
