Aktau Hotel, Kazakhstan — Hotel Switchboard Project

Aktau Hotel, Kazakhstan is a hotel project in the city of Aktau on the shore of the Caspian Sea. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution and guest room block boards with salt-laden air, severe winter conditions and a 10 kV network structure in mind.

About the Project

About the Project

On projects along the Caspian shore two climatic effects come together: salt-laden, humid sea air and a severe continental climate. High temperatures are seen in the summer months and freezing temperatures in winter. That wide temperature range affects both the thermal design inside the board and the choice of materials.

At Aktau Hotel the enclosure surface treatment is selected to withstand salt-laden air, and on the outdoor field panels the gaskets and cable entry components are made of materials that keep their flexibility at low temperature. Because of the structure of the Kazakh network, the medium voltage level within the facility is 10 kV. Guest room blocks, the kitchen and the public areas are fed from separate branches, and the heating load is the item that sets the peak in the winter months.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the guest room floor boards and the technical area supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 1,600 A class, 50 kA / 1 s, main distribution with Form 3b internal separation.
  • Guest room floor boards (DevBox): Separately protected supply and local metering for each room group.
  • Kitchen, laundry and heating plant branches: Separately metered supply for high-power technical areas.
  • Outdoor field panels: Enclosure, gasket and cable entry solutions resistant to salt-laden air and low temperature.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp) and lighting (DevPower): Detuned compensation, façade and site lighting.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Material selection over a wide temperature range

The difference between summer heat and winter frost governs the life of gaskets and plastic components; materials that keep their flexibility at low temperature are selected.

Salt-laden air and corrosion

The salt-laden air on the coast accelerates corrosion on the enclosure surface; the surface pre-treatment and the paint system are specified to a higher corrosion class.

Winter peak load and heating

In severe winter conditions the heating load sets the peak; the main distribution capacity and the compensation are verified against that scenario.

Matching the 10 kV network structure

The medium voltage level within the facility is 10 kV; the protection settings on the low voltage side are graded to the transformer characteristic.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does switchboard design change in severe winter conditions?

It changes at three points: gaskets and plastic components are selected from materials that keep their flexibility at low temperature, an anti-condensation heater inside the enclosure prevents condensation and freezing, and on outdoor field panels the cable entry components are specified so that they do not crack in the cold.

What is the installed power at Aktau Hotel, Kazakhstan?

A hotel project of this scale has an installed power of approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,250 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 1,600 A and the medium voltage level within the facility is 10 kV.

How are a coastal location and a cold climate handled together?

The two effects can conflict: the enclosure has to be sealed against corrosion, yet in a sealed enclosure condensation increases in cold weather. The solution is to combine a high corrosion class with an anti-condensation heater inside the enclosure and to make the ventilation filtered and controlled.
