About the Project

About the Project

Mary is an oasis city on the edge of the Karakum Desert, where summer temperatures approach 45 °C and fine wind-blown sand is a constant threat to equipment in the yard and control building. In a switchyard, protection relays, breaker operating mechanisms and battery chargers all rely on the auxiliary supply; if it falters, fault clearance and remote switching are put at risk. High ambient temperatures also require busbar and breaker ratings to be derated.

In a typical configuration, 10 kV Dev24/36 modular switchgear feeds approximately 2 × 1,250 kVA distribution and station service transformers. Each transformer connects to a separate busbar section of a DevPanel board with a 2 × 1,600 A main busbar and Form 3b segregation, and automatic transfer moves the load to the other section if a source is lost. DevBox boards supply the relay room, telecom equipment, air conditioning and yard lighting. A generator of around 800 kVA keeps auxiliary services running through prolonged grid outages.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

Devpan’s scope runs from the 10 kV switchgear to the switchyard’s auxiliary and ancillary service boards.

  • MV switchgear (Dev24/36): 10 kV incomer, bus section, metering and transformer protection panels; metal-enclosed modular design with 24 kV rated insulation.
  • Auxiliary main boards (DevPanel): 2 × 1,600 A main busbar, 50 kA / 1 s, Form 3b, dual-source automatic transfer and generator incomer.
  • Sub-distribution boards (DevBox): relay and telecom rooms, battery chargers, air conditioning and yard lighting, IP54-IP55.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): compensation for air-conditioning-dominated auxiliary loads.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Thermal design for desert conditions

Busbar sections and device ratings are derated for ambient temperatures approaching 45 °C, and the control building is air-conditioned.

Sand and dust protection

IP54-IP55 enclosures, gasketed doors and filtered ventilation keep fine sand away from contacts and relays.

Dual-source auxiliaries

Automatic transfer between two transformers and the generator keeps protection and control supplies uninterrupted.

Safe switching

Mechanical interlocks in the Dev24/36 panels prevent out-of-sequence opening, closing and earthing operations.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the distribution power of a facility on the scale of Mary Switchyard?

For a switchyard of this scale the installed distribution and auxiliary power is approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 × 1,250 kVA. The low-voltage main busbar is typically rated 2 × 1,600 A with a withstand of 50 kA / 1 s, and the medium-voltage level is 10 kV.

How are switchyard boards protected in a desert climate?

A high IP rating, an air-conditioned control building, filtered ventilation and ratings derated for high temperature are applied together.

What role does the generator play in the switchyard?

Typically a generator of around 800 kVA feeds battery chargers, protection and control systems and air-conditioning loads during prolonged grid outages.
