Meydan Mall Decathlon — Retail Store Switchboard Project

Meydan Mall Decathlon is a large-format retail store located inside a shopping centre. On this project Devpan manufactured the store main distribution board, the department and plant room panels and the cooling and ventilation motor outgoing ways.

About the Project

About the Project

In large-format retail stores the character of the electrical load differs from that of a shopping centre gallery. Lighting alone accounts for a significant share of the total power, and the lighting circuits are reconfigured whenever the shelving and department layout changes.

At Meydan Mall Decathlon the store board is designed on the assumption that the department layout will change: the lighting and socket outlet circuits are divided into small groups, each protected separately. Because the checkout line and the IT equipment are sensitive to interruption, they are collected on a dedicated branch. The cooling and ventilation plant is fed from separate motor outgoing ways to maintain comfort conditions inside the store.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from the store main distribution to the department and plant room panels.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, store main distribution with Form 4a – 4b internal separation.
  • Department and lighting panels (DevPower): Reconfigurable lighting circuits divided into small groups.
  • Checkout line and IT branch: Separately protected supply for equipment sensitive to interruption.
  • Motor control outgoing ways (DevControl): Cooling, ventilation and smoke extraction plant.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned stepped compensation suited to a high lighting load.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Reconfiguration to suit the department layout

The lighting and socket outlet circuits are divided into small groups; when the layout inside the store changes, reconfiguring only the branch concerned is enough.

Protecting the checkout line

Checkout terminals and IT equipment are collected on a dedicated branch, so a fault on another circuit inside the store does not interrupt sales.

Compensation under a high lighting load

Lighting accounts for a significant share of the total power and LED drivers generate harmonics; compensation is specified with detuned reactors.

Smoke extraction and emergency scenarios

Smoke extraction fans, emergency lighting and the public address system are collected on a dedicated branch and protected so that their supply continues during a fire.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is lighting divided into groups in large-format stores?

For two reasons: when the department layout inside the store changes over time only the group concerned is reconfigured, and a fault in one group does not leave the whole store in darkness. Small groups also allow the lighting to be switched off in stages at closing time.

What is the installed power at Meydan Mall Decathlon?

A large-format store of this scale has an installed power of approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 2,500 A.

Why is the checkout line fed separately?

Because checkout terminals and IT equipment are sensitive to interruption, and a halt in sales means a direct loss of revenue. A separately protected branch prevents a fault elsewhere in the store from affecting the checkout line.
