Ozak Mahmutbey — Residential Switchboard Project in a Dense Urban Fabric

Ozak Mahmutbey is a residential project rising on a restricted plot within the dense urban fabric of Istanbul. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution and block boards with compact enclosures adapted to a limited switchroom volume.

About the Project

About the Project

In projects within a dense urban fabric the plot area is restricted and the technical spaces are compressed into the smallest possible area at basement level. Switchroom width, door swing clearance and the front access allowance needed for maintenance are the real constraints on the design.

At Ozak Mahmutbey enclosure depth is reduced while the form of internal separation is preserved. To achieve that, busbar support spacing is recalculated and the cable termination volume is optimised. Vertical distribution between car park levels and the position of the floor boards are planned so that maintenance access does not obstruct vehicle circulation. Because thermal load also rises in a confined space, the ventilation arrangement is calculated separately.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from compact main distribution to the block and floor boards. Volume optimisation is the starting point of the design.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, main distribution built to a reduced enclosure depth.
  • Block and floor boards (DevBox): Front-access sub-distribution suited to a limited volume.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Detuned stepped compensation with a space-saving layout.
  • Car park and common area panels (DevPower): Lighting, jet fan supply and emergency lighting circuits.
  • Thermal design: Ventilation and layout arrangement that limits the temperature rise in a confined switchroom.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Reducing enclosure depth

Busbar support spacing and cable termination volume are re-dimensioned so that depth can be reduced while the form of internal separation is preserved. A narrow switchroom can therefore be used without compromising the level of protection.

Front access and maintenance clearance

Where rear access is impossible, the board is designed to be maintained entirely from the front; component layout and termination points are arranged accordingly.

Thermal balance in a confined space

Ambient temperature rises quickly in a small switchroom. Ventilation flow rate and busbar cross-section are calculated against the highest room temperature expected.

Vertical distribution across car park levels

Floor boards and cable routes are located where maintenance access will not cut across vehicle circulation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a narrow switchroom mean compromising the form of internal separation?

It does not. Enclosure depth can be reduced by recalculating busbar support spacing and optimising the cable termination volume. The form of internal separation is a matter of internal segregation, and with correct design it is preserved even in a shallow enclosure.

Why is ventilation calculated separately in small switchrooms?

Because the power loss inside the board stays the same while the room volume shrinks, so the ambient temperature rises faster. A higher ambient temperature reduces the current-carrying capacity of busbars and cables, which is why ventilation flow rate and cross-section selection have to be addressed together.

What is the installed power at Ozak Mahmutbey?

A residential project of this scale has an installed power of approximately 4,800 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 3 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 2,500 A.
