Cappadocia Marriott Hotel — Tourism Region Hotel Switchboard Project

Cappadocia Marriott Hotel is a hotel in a tourism region where the occupancy rate changes markedly with the season. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution boards, the guest room block boards and the compensation arrangement matched to seasonal load variation.

About the Project

About the Project

In tourism region hotels the main factor shaping the load profile is the occupancy rate. In season the property runs at full capacity, while out of season part of the guest room blocks may close entirely. That wide range means the electrical design has to be built so that it works both at peak load and at very light load.

At Cappadocia Marriott the guest room blocks are divided into separate branches, so the supply to blocks not used out of season can be switched off independently. Compensation steps are selected small, because large steps lead to over-compensation at low occupancy. The heating and cooling plant, in turn, is fed from variable speed drive outgoing ways so that it runs efficiently at part load.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the guest room block boards and the kitchen and mechanical services supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 1,600 A class, 50 kA / 1 s, main distribution with Form 3b internal separation.
  • Guest room block boards (DevBox): Supply that can be taken out of service independently block by block, with separate metering.
  • Kitchen and technical area branches: Separately metered, high-power supply.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Stepped system with small steps that does not over-compensate at low occupancy.
  • Motor control (DevControl) and lighting (DevPower): Variable speed drive outgoing ways for heating and cooling plant, façade and landscape lighting.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Seasonal occupancy and block-by-block shutdown

Guest room blocks are fed from separate branches; blocks not used out of season are taken fully out of service, which brings their standby consumption to zero.

Compensation behaviour at light load

A compensation system whose step size is selected too large over-compensates at low occupancy. Small steps remove that risk.

Heating and cooling efficiency at part load

The heating and cooling plant is fed from variable speed drive outgoing ways; when occupancy falls the system runs only as far as required and consumption drops.

Putting the site back into service at the start of the season

A standard check list is defined for re-energising closed blocks; insulation resistance and protection settings are verified at the start of every season.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is compensation sized in seasonally operated facilities?

The steps are selected small. When occupancy falls the reactive demand of the property falls with it, and a large-step compensation system then leads to over-compensation and a voltage rise. Small steps work correctly both at light load and at full load.

What is the installed power at Cappadocia Marriott Hotel?

A tourism region hotel of this scale has an installed power of approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,250 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 1,600 A.

What is gained by closing blocks out of season?

Even in unused blocks the lighting, the standby consumption of socket outlets and the standby mode of the air conditioning use energy. A supply arrangement that can be switched off block by block removes that standby consumption entirely and lowers the out-of-season operating cost.
