Georgia Sports Complex — Sports Facility Switchboard Project

Georgia Sports Complex is a multi-function facility bringing indoor and outdoor sports areas together on a single site. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution boards, the pitch lighting and spectator area supply branches and the outdoor field panels.

About the Project

About the Project

Multi-function sports complexes have no single load profile. Indoor halls, outdoor pitches, training areas and spectator stands operate at different times and at different intensities. Some areas run on a daily training routine, while others reach full capacity only on match days.

At the Georgia Sports Complex this variety is answered with area-based distribution. Every sports area is fed from its own branch and can be isolated independently, so the standby consumption of unused areas disappears. The lighting masts on the outdoor pitches are fed from outdoor field panels, where the degree of protection and the surface treatment are raised to suit weather conditions. The medium voltage inside the site is at 10 kV.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from low voltage main distribution to the area supply panels and the outdoor pitch lighting.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Area supply panels (DevBox): Separately protected and separately metered branches for the indoor hall, the outdoor pitches and the training areas.
  • Pitch lighting panels (DevPower): Staged energisation of the floodlight groups and stand lighting.
  • Outdoor field panels: Raised degree of protection, condensation control and corrosion-resistant surface treatment.
  • Motor control (DevControl) and compensation (DevComp): Ventilation, heating and irrigation groups, detuned compensation.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Independent operation per area

Every sports area is fed from its own branch and can be isolated separately; the standby consumption of unused areas disappears entirely.

Staged energisation of the floodlights

Switching high-power floodlights on at the same moment creates a severe current surge; staged energisation spreads that surge over time.

Weather conditions at the outdoor field panels

In panels located in the open the degree of protection is raised, an enclosure heater is used against condensation and the surface treatment is selected to withstand corrosion.

Match day peak load

The peak load occurs on match days; main distribution and compensation are verified against that scenario while the low load of the daily training routine is also taken into account.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is distribution set up in multi-function sports facilities?

An area-based architecture is preferred: every sports area is fed from its own supply branch, metered separately and, where required, isolated independently. This structure both removes the standby consumption of unused areas and prevents a fault in one area from affecting the others.

What is the installed power for the Georgia Sports Complex?

For a sports complex of this scale the installed power is approximately 4,800 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 3 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A and the medium voltage inside the site is at 10 kV.

How are the outdoor pitch lighting masts fed?

They are fed from outdoor field panels distributed across the site. In these panels the degree of protection is raised to suit weather conditions, an enclosure heater prevents condensation, and every floodlight group is protected separately so that a fault in one group does not black out the whole pitch.
