Istanbul Expo Centre is an exhibition and congress centre working with wide hall volumes and changing stand layouts. On this project Devpan manufactured the Form 4b main distribution boards, the stand supply columns inside the halls and the motor control centres.

About the Project
The distinctive feature of the electrical infrastructure in exhibition centres is that the load pattern changes completely at every event. At one fair, heavy machinery stands occupy one part of the hall and low-power information stands the other; at the next event that layout is reversed.
At Istanbul Expo Centre this flexibility is provided by supply points distributed across the hall floor. Reached through floor ducts and ceiling columns, those points make it possible to draw power whatever the stand layout. Each point is separately protected and metered, so consumption can be billed to the individual exhibitor. Hall lighting and ventilation are fed from separate branches and controlled in stages according to the event scenario.
Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture
The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the stand supply points inside the halls and the mechanical services motor control centres.
- Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 4,000 A class, 80 kA / 1 s withstand, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
- Stand supply panels (DevBox): Separately metered and separately protected supply points reached through floor ducts and ceiling columns.
- Motor control centres (DevControl): Ventilation, smoke extraction and chiller sets.
- Hall lighting panels (DevPower): General lighting that can be controlled in stages, plus emergency lighting circuits.
- Power factor correction (DevComp): Stepped compensation suited to a load that varies widely between events.

Project-Specific Engineering Topics
Adapting to changing stand layouts
Supply points distributed across the hall floor make it possible to draw power whatever the stand arrangement; each point is separately protected and separately metered.
Metering per exhibitor
Metering at the stand supply points makes billing to the exhibitor possible; consumption can be reported at the end of the event.
Compensation over a wide load range
When the hall is empty the load falls almost to zero, and it peaks during a fair. Compensation stages are selected to work correctly across that wide range.
Crowd and smoke extraction scenario
Because of the high user density, the smoke extraction fans, emergency lighting and public address system are collected on a separately protected branch.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is stand supply resolved in exhibition halls?
It is resolved with supply points distributed across the floor and ceiling of the hall. Reached through floor ducts and ceiling columns, those points allow power to be drawn even though the stand layout changes at every event. Each point is separately protected and metered, so billing per exhibitor is possible.
What is the installed power for Istanbul Expo Centre?
For an exhibition and congress centre of this scale the installed power is approximately 8,000 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 4 x 2,000 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 4,000 A with a short-time withstand current of 80 kA / 1 s.
How does compensation work in facilities where the load falls to zero?
The steps are selected small and the control unit is set to switch the stages out completely at light load. Otherwise the capacitor banks left in circuit while the hall is empty lead to over-compensation and a voltage rise.
