İstanbul Medeniyet University — Campus Switchboard Project

The İstanbul Medeniyet University campus is a site that has expanded over time with new faculty and research buildings. On this project Devpan produced the main distribution architecture open to expansion, the block sub-distribution boards and the compensation systems.

About the Project

About the Project

Campuses are not structures completed in one go. New faculties, research centres and social facilities are added over the years. Where the electrical infrastructure does not anticipate that growth from the outset, the main distribution has to be modified for every new building, which means an outage across the campus.

At İstanbul Medeniyet University the main distribution is sized for the final campus load and spare outgoing capacity is reserved. The feeder for a new building can be added without de-energising the existing structures. Because of the distance between blocks, cable cross-sections are selected against voltage drop; each block is metered separately, so consumption becomes comparable across the whole campus.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from campus main distribution to the block and floor panels. Expandability is the starting point of the design.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, campus main distribution with empty outgoing compartments and busbar capacity reserved for new blocks.
  • Block sub-distribution boards (DevBox): Separately metered sub-distribution for faculty, research and administrative blocks.
  • Laboratory and research branches: Separately protected supply for sensitive equipment.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Modular compensation to which stages can be added as the campus grows.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): Classroom, campus road and emergency lighting circuits.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Sizing for the final campus load

Main busbar and breaker selection follows the completed state of the campus rather than the existing buildings, so new faculty buildings can be added without changing the main distribution.

Adding a branch under load

Empty compartments and busbar connection points are reserved for new blocks; a new feeder can be commissioned while the rest of the campus stays energised.

Voltage drop between blocks

On large campuses cross-sections are selected against the voltage drop limit rather than current-carrying capacity; the supply quality of the most remote block is the governing factor.

Comparing consumption block by block

Every block has its own metering; comparing the consumption of buildings with similar functions makes inefficient points easy to identify.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is main distribution planned on growing campuses?

The main distribution is sized for the final target load of the campus, with empty outgoing compartments and busbar capacity reserved for future buildings. A main busbar selected only for the existing buildings has to be replaced completely at the first expansion.

What is the installed power for İstanbul Medeniyet University?

For a campus of this scale the installed power is approximately 4,800 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 3 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A.

What does block-based metering provide on a campus?

It makes it possible to compare the consumption of buildings with similar functions. If one of two teaching blocks consumes markedly more, the cause is sought in the insulation, the lighting or the air conditioning settings; that observation is only possible where block-based metering exists.

Do you have a project of a similar scale?

Send us your single-line diagram, your transformer rating or simply your load list. Our engineering team runs the short-circuit and discrimination study and defines the form of separation and busbar cross-section with you.
