İTO Port — Port and Transport Infrastructure Switchboard Project

İTO Port is a port facility that brings cargo handling and transport infrastructure together on one site. On this project Devpan manufactured the Form 4b main distribution boards, the quayside supply panels and the enclosure solutions resistant to the marine environment.

About the Project

About the Project

At port facilities the electrical infrastructure operates continuously in salt-laden, humid sea air. This environment accelerates corrosion in the panel enclosure and at the connection points; even where a high degree of protection is selected, the surface treatment and the life of the gaskets become decisive.

At İTO Port the supply points distributed along the quay feed the cranes and handling equipment together with the ship connection points. In these panels the degree of protection is raised to IP54 – IP55 and the enclosure surface treatment is determined according to the marine environment. Crane loads have an impulsive character; the supply branches are sized for that impulse. The yard lighting, spread over a wide area, is divided into groups.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the quayside supply panels and the yard lighting.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, Form 4b internal separation, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Quayside supply panels (DevBox): Supply points for the cranes and handling equipment; IP54 – IP55 enclosures with surface treatment suited to the marine environment.
  • Motor control centres (DevControl): Motor outgoing ways for the pump, conveyor and handling systems.
  • Yard lighting panels (DevPower): Quay, storage area and road lighting; branches divided into groups.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Stepped detuned compensation suited to an impulsive crane load.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Corrosion resistance in a marine environment

Salt-laden, humid air accelerates corrosion on the enclosure surface; the surface pre-treatment, the paint system and the mounting components are selected to a higher corrosion class.

The impulsive character of crane loads

Cranes and handling equipment draw an impulsive current while lifting and lowering; the supply branches and the protection settings are sized for that character.

Lighting grouping across a wide yard

Quay and storage area lighting is divided into groups; a fault in one group does not black out the whole yard and night operations continue.

Safety at the ship connection points

At the quayside supply points, residual current protection and equipotential bonding are planned with the wet ground and the metal structural elements in mind.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What determines panel life at port facilities?

Corrosion resistance determines it. In salt-laden, humid sea air a high IP class alone is not enough; the enclosure surface pre-treatment, the paint system, the gasket material and the mounting components must all be selected to the same corrosion class. A single weak component invalidates the whole protection in a short time.

What is the installed power for İTO Port?

For a port facility of this scale the installed power is approximately 4,800 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 3 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar rating is planned at 2 x 2,500 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.

How are the crane supply branches sized?

They are sized against the peak current at the moment of lifting, not against average consumption. A crane load has an impulsive character; the cross-section and the protection selection must carry that peak, while the breaker tripping curve must not interpret the impulse as a fault.
