Küçükçekmece Municipality Building — Public Building Switchboard Project

Küçükçekmece Municipality Building is a public service building with heavy citizen circulation. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution boards, the floor boards and the separately protected branches feeding the data room and the council hall.

About the Project

About the Project

In public service buildings the electrical infrastructure answers two different needs at the same time. On one side are the areas open to the public: the information desk, the cash desks and the waiting halls, where user density is high and escape lighting is critical. On the other are the administrative departments and the data room, where continuity and information security come first.

At Küçükçekmece Municipality Building these two areas are fed from separate branches. The data room and the communications cabinets are collected on a busbar backed by an uninterruptible power supply. The council hall, in turn, is a dedicated space used intensively on meeting days and equipped with sound and video systems; it is collected on a separately protected branch. Because of the crowded use, the emergency lighting and wayfinding systems are planned separately as well.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the floor boards and the data room and council hall supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Generator and uninterruptible supply branches: Separation of the normal, generator-backed and uninterruptible supplies.
  • Floor and department boards (DevBox): Separately protected supply for the administrative departments, the cash desks and the information areas.
  • Council hall panels: A separately protected branch for the sound, video and stage lighting systems.
  • Lighting and power panels (DevPower): Waiting hall, car park, escape lighting and wayfinding circuits.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Escape lighting under crowded use

In areas open to the public the emergency lighting and wayfinding systems are protected separately; the circuits that must stay energised in a fire scenario are planned independently of the normal lighting.

The data room and information security

The communications cabinets and the servers are fed from an uninterruptible power supply outgoing way; this branch is collected on a separate busbar and located in a space with restricted physical access.

The council hall and event load

The hall only runs intensively on meeting days; the sound and video systems and the stage lighting are collected on a separately protected branch.

Continuity at the cash and information desks

The IT equipment of the departments serving citizens is fed from the generator-backed branch, so service interruption is kept to a minimum during a supply failure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which loads are supplied with redundancy in public buildings?

Three groups: the data room and communications infrastructure from an uninterruptible power supply, the IT equipment of the departments serving citizens from the generator-backed branch, and the emergency lighting and wayfinding systems from their own autonomous supply arrangement. These three layers are kept separate so that they do not become entangled.

What is the installed power at Küçükçekmece Municipality Building?

A public service building of this scale has an installed power of approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 2,500 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.

How does high user density affect the design?

It affects it at two points: the scope of the escape lighting and wayfinding systems grows, and those circuits are protected entirely independently of the normal lighting. Lighting that continues during the evacuation of a crowd is the most critical requirement of the fire scenario.
