Lamer Dragos — Coastal Residential Switchboard Application

Lamer Dragos is a residential project on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, close to the sea. On this project Devpan manufactured the main distribution and block boards with enclosure protection raised against salt-laden air, together with the outdoor field panels.

About the Project

About the Project

The additional problem facing switchboards in developments near the sea is corrosion. Salt-laden, humid air degrades enclosure surfaces and door hinges over time; gasket life shortens and condensation inside the board increases. The effect is most pronounced on panels standing outdoors.

At Lamer Dragos the enclosure surface treatment is therefore selected to a higher corrosion class. On the outdoor field panels the gasket system, the cable entry sealing and the anti-condensation heater are planned together. Inside the buildings, ventilation paths are arranged so that humid air does not circulate continuously through the board. Rising mains and block boards are resolved with the standard residential architecture.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the block metering panels and the outdoor field panels along the shoreline.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 2,500 A class, 65 kA / 1 s, main distribution with bus coupler arrangement.
  • Block sub-distribution and metering panels (DevBox): Consumer metering and floor distribution.
  • Outdoor field panels: Raised corrosion resistance, gasket system and condensation control inside the enclosure.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp): Automatic stepped compensation with detuned reactors.
  • Landscape and shoreline lighting (DevPower): Pathway, garden and security lighting circuits.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Salt-laden air and corrosion class

In buildings on the coast the enclosure surface treatment is selected to a higher corrosion class; paint thickness, pre-treatment and the material of the fixing components all follow from that choice.

Condensation control

High humidity and the day-night temperature swing create condensation inside the board. Anti-condensation heaters and controlled ventilation keep the internal humidity within limits.

Gaskets and cable entry sealing

On outdoor panels gasket life directly determines how long the degree of protection is maintained. Cable glands and gasket materials are selected to withstand the marine environment.

Earthing and corrosion interaction

Salt-bearing ground accelerates corrosion of the earth electrodes. Electrode material and connection points are chosen with that condition in mind, and the measurement interval is shortened.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How are switchboard enclosures protected on coastal projects?

Protection works in three layers: the surface pre-treatment and paint system are selected to a higher corrosion class, gaskets and cable entry components are made from materials that resist salt-laden air, and an anti-condensation heater inside the enclosure prevents moisture forming. Unless all three are applied together, the degree of protection degrades over time.

What is the installed power at Lamer Dragos?

A residential project of this scale has an installed power of approximately 3,200 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,600 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 2,500 A with a short-time withstand current of 65 kA / 1 s.

Is raising the degree of protection enough in a humid environment?

On its own it is not. The degree of protection limits what enters from outside but does nothing about the condensation that forms within. In a sealed enclosure, humid air that cools deposits water on the internal surfaces, so the design has to combine the IP rating with an anti-condensation heater or controlled ventilation.
