Trabzon Radisson Hotel — Hotel Switchboard Project

Trabzon Radisson Hotel is a city hotel on the Black Sea coast. On this project Devpan supplied the main distribution boards, the guest room floor boards, the generator transfer arrangement and enclosure solutions suited to a humid climate.

About the Project

About the Project

Two topics come to the fore in hotels located in coastal cities: high humidity and supply continuity. Humidity leads over time to deterioration in the enclosure and at the connection points, while interruptions on the network side are felt directly in guest satisfaction.

At Trabzon Radisson Hotel the generator transfer arrangement is set up so that, at the moment of an interruption, the life safety and lift loads are picked up first and the guest room groups and the kitchen load follow in stages. On the enclosure side the surface treatment and gasket selection follow the humid climate, and condensation control is applied to the boards in technical areas. Guest room blocks and public areas are fed from separate branches.

Scope

Devpan Scope and Switchboard Architecture

The Devpan scope reaches from main distribution to the guest room floor boards and the technical area supplies.

  • Main distribution boards (DevPanel): 1,600 A class, 50 kA / 1 s, main distribution with Form 3b internal separation.
  • Generator transfer and staged pick-up: Life safety, lift, guest room and kitchen loads separated in order of priority.
  • Guest room floor boards (DevBox): Separately protected supply for each room group.
  • Kitchen, laundry and technical area panels: Degree of protection and surface treatment suited to a humid environment.
  • Power factor correction (DevComp) and lighting panels (DevPower): Detuned compensation, lobby, façade and emergency lighting.

Engineering

Project-Specific Engineering Topics

Staged generator pick-up

Placing the whole load on the generator at once causes the voltage to collapse during starting. Loads are picked up in stages in order of priority, which limits the step change imposed on the generator.

Enclosure protection in a humid climate

In coastal cities the surface treatment and gasket selection are raised above those of standard building boards; in technical areas an anti-condensation heater inside the enclosure prevents condensation.

Separating guest rooms from public areas

Guest room blocks and the lobby, restaurant and meeting areas are fed from separate branches, so work in a public area does not affect the guest rooms.

Prioritising the lift load

At the moment of an interruption the lifts must be able to reach floor level and open their doors; the lift branch is among the first groups in the generator pick-up sequence.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are generators picked up in stages in hotels?

Because placing the whole load on at once causes a serious voltage collapse at the generator output and the motor loads cannot start. Staged pick-up spreads that step over time by energising priority loads such as life safety and lifts first and the guest room and kitchen groups afterwards.

What is the installed power at Trabzon Radisson Hotel?

A city hotel of this scale has an installed power of approximately 2,500 kVA, with a typical transformer configuration of 2 x 1,250 kVA. The main busbar is rated at 2 x 1,600 A with a short-time withstand current of 50 kA / 1 s.

How is switchboard life extended in a humid climate?

Three measures are applied together: the enclosure surface treatment is raised so that it resists corrosion, gaskets and cable entry components are selected to keep moisture out, and an anti-condensation heater inside the enclosure prevents condensation. Raising the degree of protection alone does not solve internal condensation.
